Contemporary Rear Garden

Residential Rear Garden, Chalfont St Peter

Following an extensive house refurbishment, this client wanted to create a beautiful, contemporary entertaining space across the back of the house.

The house is at an angle to the garden, so we created an angled terrace and angled central planting bed to draw the eye down towards the end of the garden, rather than the side hedge. This also created more interesting shapes on the terrace.

The central planting bed, with Acer Aconitifolium and seasonal planting creates a focal point from the large picture windows in the kitchen and creates separate spaces for relaxing and dining on the terrace.

Bringing the Outside In

This planting bed is designed to ensure that there is an interesting garden view from the large picture windows all year round, with a feature Acer, perennial planting and bulbs for winter interest

Defined spaces

The central planting bed creates two distinct seating spaces - one for relaxing on a sofa and one for dining. In both these spaces, you are surrounded by beautiful, seasonal planting

A place to relax

The generous seating area provides a great space to relax and enjoy the view down the garden

Softening the terrace

New planting beds at lawn level help to soften the terrace into the garden. Two new Malus Profusion trees, one either side of the central pathway, create height and interest throughout the year

Planting close to the house

The kitchen area has large picture windows overlooking both the lawn and the side of the house. This area includes abundant planting to ensure there is a beautiful view whichever way you look out of the house!

Shady planting

There is a new shady planting bed under a large oak tree to the side of the terrace. It includes a Cornus Kousa tree and shade loving perennials and bulbs to provide colour throughout the year
